Inherited from Old East Slavic рѣшити (rěšiti, to untie, absolve), from Proto-Slavic *rěšiti, from Proto-Indo-European *wreyḱ- (to twist, bend). Cognates include Ukrainian ріши́ти (rišýty), Belarusian рашы́ць (rašýcʹ), Serbo-Croatian решити, Czech řešit.
