From Proto-Mordvinic *śeďəj~*śeďəŋ, from Proto-Uralic *śüdäme. Cognates include Moksha седи (śeďi), Finnish sydän (sydäme-), Eastern Mari шӱм (šüm), Udmurt сюлэм (śulem) and Hungarian szív.
