From Classical Mongolian ᠲᠠᠬᠢᠶ᠎ᠠ (takiy-a), from Proto-Mongolic *takïxa, probably a loan from Proto-Turkic *tiakïgu or otherwise related. Compare Proto-Tungusic *tiake (hen) and Manchu ᠴᠣᡴᠣ (coko, chicken). Cognate with Buryat тахяа (taxjaa), Kalmyk така (taka), Dongxiang tegha, Khitan 𘰺𘯛𘯺 (*t qo a).
