From *teš-ük "hole", from Proto-Turkic *deĺ- (to pierce, make a hole).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (tešük, hole); Kazakh тесік (tesık), Kyrgyz тешик (teşik), Southern Altai тежик (težik), Uzbek teshik, Khakas тизік (tizìk), Turkish deşik (hole), etc.
