From Persian تنباکو (tanbâko, tobacco), from Arabic طَبَاق (ṭabāq, a type of medicinal herb) and/or طُبَاق (ṭubāq, (same)), or via Russian таба́к (tabák, tobacco), from the same source.

Cognate with Kazakh темекі (temekı), Nogai тамеке (tameke), Kyrgyz тамеки (tameki), Uzbek tamaki, Turkmen temmäki, Azerbaijani tənbəki, etc.
