Etymology edit

From Proto-Slavic *xolča, *xolša, *kolša, thought to be borrowed from Vulgar Latin, from Latin calcea. Compare Belarusian кало́ша (kalóša, trouser/pant leg), Serbo-Croatian hlȁče pl (trousers, pants).

Alternatively related to Proto-Slavic *xoliti.
