Inherited from Old East Slavic хоробръ (xorobrŭ), from Proto-Slavic *xorbrъ. Cognate with Belarusian харо́бры (xaróbry).

Doublet of хра́брый (xrábryj, brave), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
