From Proto-Turkic *sïčgan (mouse). Often considered a nomen agentis from the verb *sïč- (to defecate). Cognate with Old Uyghur syčγ՚n (sïčɣan, mouse); Karakhanid سِجْغانْ (sïčɣān, mouse), Tatar тычкан (tıçkan), Bashkir сысҡан (sısqan), Southern Altai чычкан (čïčkan), Crimean Tatar sıçan, Kumyk чычкъан (çıçqan), Kazakh шышқан (şyşqan), Shor шышқан (šïšqan), Uzbek sichqon, Uyghur چاشقان (chashqan), Azerbaijani siçan, Turkmen syçan, Turkish sıçan (rat), etc.
