From Proto-Mordvinic *šukštərəv~*šukštərəŋ, probably inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ćɜkčɜ-tɜrɜ ? (“currant; Ribes”). Cognate with Finnish siestar, Estonian sõstar.
