Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic юнъ (junŭ), from Proto-Slavic *junъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jauˀnás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂yuh₁en-. Displaced the inherited Old East Slavic унъ (unŭ), оунъ (unŭ).
