Probably borrowed from French hystérique, from Latin hysterica passiō, from Ancient Greek ὑστερικός (husterikós), from ὑστέρα (hustéra),[1] feminine of ὕστερος (hústeros), from Proto-Indo-European *údteros. Compare Russian исте́рика (istérika).
