Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yagmur (rain);[1][2] equivalent to ҫу (śu, to rain) + -мӑр (-măr).[3]

Cognate with Turkish yağmur, Uzbek yomgʻir, Bashkir ямғыр (yamğır) and Yakut самыыр (samıır).
