Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *ăča / *ĕče (mother; elder sister; older woman). The final -y is originally a vocative affix. Also see әсә (əsə, mother).

Compare to Kyrgyz ачай (acay, the way a child addresses his/her mother when raised by his/her grandmother).
