Etymology edit

The literary form բադրիջան (badriǰan) is adopted from the Tbilisi dialect and is borrowed from Georgian ბადრიჯანი (badriǯani). Some of the alternative forms are from Middle Armenian պատինճան (patinčan) and its by-forms and some are from Ottoman Turkish بادلجان (patlıcan) and its by-forms. All ultimately from Persian بادنجان (bâdenjân) and its various descendants.
