Etymology

From գիր (gir, writing) +‎ -աբար (-abar, adverbial suffix), as opposed to աշխարհաբար (ašxarhabar), the vernacular language. The formerly common misconstruction գրաբառ (grabaṙ) is due to the influence of բառ (baṙ, word).

In this word alone the suffix -աբար (-abar) is pronounced as [ɑˈpʰɑɾ] in Standard Eastern Armenian instead of the expected [ɑˈbɑɾ].[1]
