Etymology

edit

Ultimately from Arabic غَبَب (ḡabab), غَبْغَب (ḡabḡab). The Muş forms are contaminated with խոպոպ (xopop), խոպոպիք (xopopikʻ).

The philological status of the form խպիպ (xpip), which was learnedly adopted in the literary language from the dictionaries, is uncertain. It is included in Aṙjeṙn baṙaṙan[1] as an Old Armenian word, but its place of attestation is unknown. NHB treats it as a dialectal word.[2]
