Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps borrowed from some Iranian descendant of Proto-Iranian *Hmarz- (to wipe, rub), which is cognate with Sanskrit मार्जयति (mārjayati, to wipe, purify, cleanse). See Cheung for the Iranian root.

  1. (transitive) to drive away, to repel; to reject, to remove; to refuse, to deny
    • 5th century, Bible, Exodus 2.17:
      Եւ եկեալ այլ հովիւք մերժեցին զնոսա ի բաց։
      Ew ekeal ayl hoviwkʻ meržecʻin znosa i bacʻ.
      And the shepherds came and drove them away.
