Etymology edit
Certainly an Iranian borrowing, but the details are unclear.
Ačaṙyan remarks that Middle Persian [script needed] (ptwnd /patvand, paywand/, “connection, relationship”) fits in form but not meaning. J̌ahukyan is more positive, adducing also Persian پابند (pâband, “fetter”), پایبست (pây-bast, “foundation”). Compare also Pazend Middle Persian 𐬞𐬀𐬉𐬬𐬀𐬧𐬛 (paēvaṇd), Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫛𐫏𐫇𐫗 (pywn /paywann, paywenn/, “connection, tie”), Khotanese [script needed] (pabana-, “continuum, connexion”). All of these ultimately go back to Proto-Iranian *pati- (“against, toward”) + *band- (“to bind”).
