Etymology edit

The word is not attested in old literature, therefore standard etymological dictionaries do not include it. Nor is ջրիմուռ (ǰrimuṙ) recorded in the dialects. Norayr marks it as Middle Armenian.[2] Included in dictionaries published after Norayr,[3][4][5] some spelling it ջրի մուռ (ǰri muṙ).[6][7][8] In the modern literary language ջրիմուռ (ǰrimuṙ) is the standard word for "alga".

The origin is perhaps from ջրի (ǰri, water's) +‎ *մուռ (*muṙ, moss), the simplex of reduplicated մամուռ (mamuṙ, moss). In fact, մուռ (muṙ, moss) may be attested in the Lori dialect (see the etymology of Old Armenian մամուռ (mamuṙ)).

For the formation, compare Middle Armenian ջրի գորտնբուրդ (ǰri gortnburd, duckweed).[9]
