Etymology

edit

According to Ačaṙyan, from earlier *սինամարգ (*sinamarg) (note the dialectal forms of սիրամարգ (siramarg)), an Iranian borrowing. See Middle Persian [script needed] (synmwlw /Sēnmurw/) for more. Note also Old Georgian ფარშამანგი (paršamangi).

J̌ahukyan notes, that the word was reshaped in Armenian by folk etymology under the influence of սիր- (sir-, love).
