Old ArmenianEdit

EtymologyEdit

First attested in 1787, of uncertain origin.

According to some, e.g. Malxaseancʿ, of onomatopoeic origin, from the sound made when sipping coffee. Typologically compare Hungarian szürcsöl ‎(to slurp, sip), also of onomatopoeic origin. Rejected by Ačaṙyan. J̌ahukyan is more optimistic.

Urišean derives from Arabic سُلْج ‎(sulj, a delight swallowed with food).
