Etymology

From a Proto-Semitic root, (ʾ-m-m), forming words related to preceding, leading, or heading in a direction. Cognate with Classical Syriac ܐܡܘܬܐ (ʾumməṯā), Hebrew אומה / אֻמָּה (ʾummā) and Arabic أُمَّة (ʔumma).
