אוקראַיִנישע
Yiddish edit
Etymology 1 edit
Adjective edit
אוקראַיִנישע • (ukrainishe)
- inflection of אוקראַיִניש (ukrainish):
Etymology 2 edit
Back-formation from אוקראַיִנישער (ukrainisher) (Ukrainian Jew), from a clipping of אוקראַיִנישער ייִד (ukrainisher yid).
Noun edit
אוקראַיִנישע • (ukrainishe) f, plural אוקראַיִנישע (ukrainishe)
Usage notes edit
- Yiddish rigorously distinguishes between Jews and non-Jews in national terminology. A Ukrainian non-Jewish woman is not an ukrainishe, but rather an אוקראַיִנערין (ukrainerin) or אוקראַיִנערקע (ukrainerke).
- This noun declines in much the same way as the adjective אוקראַיִניש (ukrainish), but without the separate predicate form. For example, the dative singular is אוקראַיִנישער (ukrainisher).
