Etymology

edit

בולבע (bulbe) +‎ ־ען (-en) , from the phrase מאַכן אַ בולבע (makhn a bulbe, literally to make/do a potato) or כאַפּן אַ בולבע (khapn a bulbe, literally to grab a potato). Alternative form stems from בולבע (bulbe) +‎ ־עווען (-even), which appears to be an exclusively Yiddish formation as neither Belarusian *бульбаваць (*bulʹbavacʹ), Polish *bulwować nor Ukrainian *бульбувати (*bulʹbuvaty) are widely attested.

Verb

edit

בולבען (bulben) (past participle געבולבעט (gebulbet))

  1. to bubble
  2. to mumble, stutter
