EtymologyEdit

Root
י־ב־שׁ

From the root י־ב־שׁ(y-b-sh); compare יָבֵשׁ(yavésh, dry).

VerbEdit

התייבש \ הִתְיַבֵּשׁ (hityabésh) (hitpa'el construction)

  1. (intransitive) To dry, to dry out: to become dry.
    הבגדים מתייבשים.‎‎ ― hab'gadím mityabshím.The clothes are drying.

Usage notesEdit

  • Unlike English dry, Hebrew הִתְיַבֵּשׁ is specifically used when a person or thing is becoming dry on its own. When one person or thing is drying another, the related transitive verb ייבש \ יִבֵּשׁ(yibésh) is used.
