וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ (vayishm'ú)

  1. Third-person masculine plural vav-consecutive imperfect (hence past tense) of שָׁמַע (shamá).
    • Tanach, Exodus 4:31, with translation of Aryeh Kaplan:
      וַיַּאֲמֵן הָעָם וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ כִּי־פָקַד יהוה אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
      vayaamén haám vayishm'ú ki-fakád YHVH et-b'né yisraél
      The people believed. They accepted the message that God had granted special providence to the Israelites
