From Old High German nāhisto, from Proto-Germanic *nēhwist (nearest, closest). Compare German nächster (pronounced /ˈnɛːkstɐ/ in southern Germany). Related to נאָענט (noent). Probably cognate to rather than derived from English next, as usage in non-US texts is attested.
