From Middle High German brēzel, from Old High German brezitella, from Vulgar Latin *brāchiātellus (small cake), from Latin bracchiātus (have branches like arms), from bracchium (arm) + -ātus. Cognate to German Brezel. See also פּוטער (puter) for the word-initial /b/ → /p/ shift.
