Related to Arabic تُفَّاح (tuffāḥ) and Ugaritic 𐎚𐎔𐎈 (tpḥ); the word is not attested in Aramaic. Sometimes claimed to be from the roots נ־פ־ח (n-p-ḥ, to scent) or ת־פ־ח (t-p-ḥ, be round).
