Borrowed from Classical Persian آذَرْبَایْجَان (āzarbāyjān), Arabized form of Early Classical Persian آذَرْبَایْگَان (āzarbāygān) / آذَرْبَادْگَان (āzarbādgān), from Middle Persian ʾtwrpʾtkʾn / ʾtwrpʾtkn (Ādurbādagān), named after Atropates, the founder of the kingdom of Atropatene.
