Arabized form of Early Classical Persian آذَرْبَایْگَان (āḏarbāygān, āzarbāygān) / آذَرْبَادْگَان (āḏarbādgān, āzarbādgān), from Middle Persian ʾtwrpʾtkʾn (ādurbādagān). By surface analysis, آذرباد (âzarbâd, Atropates) +‎ ـگان (-gân, relational suffix).
