اِنْسَلَخَ (insalaḵa) VII (non-past يَنْسَلِخُ (yansaliḵu), verbal noun اِنْسِلَاخ (insilāḵ))

  1. to cast off, to slough, to become stripped of, to become detached
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 7:175:
      وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ الَّذِي آتَيْنَاهُ آيَاتِنَا فَانْسَلَخَ مِنْهَا فَأَتْبَعَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْغَاوِينَ
      wa-tlu ʕalay-him nabaʔa llaḏī ʔātaynāhu ʔāyātinā fa-nsalaḵa min-hā fa-ʔatbaʕa-hū š-šayṭānu fa-kāna mina l-ḡāwīna
      And recite to them the news of him whom we gave [notice of] Our signs but detached himself from them, so Satan pursued him and he became of the misled.
  2. (of a month) to end, to pass
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 9:5:
      فَإِذَا ٱنْسَلَخَ الْأَشْهُرُ الْحُرُمُ فَاقْتُلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدْتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَاحْصُرُوهُمْ وَاقْعُدُوا لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ
      fa-ʔiḏā nsalaḵa al-ʔašhuru l-ḥurumu fa-qtulū l-mušrikīna ḥayṯu wajadttumū-hum wa-ḵuḏū-hum wa-ḥṣurū-hum wa-qʕudū la-hum kulla marṣadin
      And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit waiting for them at every place of ambush.
