From Sanskrit श्वशुर (śvaśura), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swáćuras, from Proto-Indo-European *swéḱuros. Cognate with Kalasha išpášur, Hindi ससुर (sasur), Northern Kurdish xezûr, Catalan sogre, German Schwäher.
