From Middle Persian [script needed] (wʾtlng /⁠wādrang⁠/, citron). Akin to Manichaean Parthian [script needed] (wʾdrwng /⁠wādrūng⁠/, lemon balm, balm mint) and Iranian-borrowed Old Armenian վարունգ (varung), Mongolian батраш (batraš), Kalmyk батраш (batraş). Further origin in Sanskrit मातुलुङ्ग (mātuluṅga, citron (tree)).
