Inherited from Proto-Turkic *teriŋ (deep); cognate with Azerbaijani dərin, Bashkir тәрән (tərən), Chuvash тарӑн (tarăn), Kazakh терең (tereñ), Kyrgyz терең (tereŋ), Tuvan терең (tereñ) and Yakut дириҥ (diriñ).
