Uncertain. Possibly from Aramaic [Term?]; cfr. Western Neo-Aramaic ܙܰܠܡܬ݂ܰܐ / زَلمثَا (zaləmṯā), with the same meaning. Alternatively from Arabic زَلَمَة (zalama, [figure of the] human body), from زَلَمَ (zalama, to cut off).
