From Middle Persian 𐭮𐭯𐭠𐭧𐭯𐭲𐭩 (spāhbed), from Proto-Iranian *spādapati-, from Proto-Iranian *cwaHdaHpatiš (commander of the army). By surface analysis, سپه (sepah, army) +‎ ـبد (-bod, lord, master).
