Likely an augmentation of the root خ ب ط (ḵ-b-ṭ) meaning “to knock leaves off a branch to the ground”, “to disturb or to mess up”, “to be confounded or confused”; compare also ل خ ب ط (l-ḵ-b-ṭ) and خ ل ب ط (ḵ-l-b-ṭ) denoting a similar conception of a mess or disorganized pile.
