Of a rare pattern yaFʿīL – else found only in يَقْطِين (yaqṭīn, a kind of squash or gourd) and يَعْقِيد (yaʕqīd, thickened honey) – but connected to the root ع ض د (ʕ-ḍ-d), so perhaps from a Semitic substrate.
