Etymology

edit

Probably cognate with Gondi పీర్ (pīr, stomach), Telugu ప్రేగు (prēgu, gut), Prakrit 𑀧𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀝 (pĕṭṭa, stomach), 𑀧𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (pŏṭṭa). Relation to Proto-Dravidian *poṭṭ- (stomach) is unclear; ultimately the Indo-Aryan and Dravidian terms may share a common source.
