Etymology edit
From Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Latin strāta; reinforced in its modern sense of “highway/freeway” as an allusion to French autostrade, Arabic أَوْتُوسْتْرَاد (ʔawtūstrād) and Hebrew אוֹטוֹסְטְרָדָה (otostrada); compare also borrowed into Arabic صِرَاط (ṣirāṭ, “path, way, road”).

This word is traditionally masculine in it's original sense of “street/paved road”, but is feminine in the modern sense of “highway/freeway” due to it being influenced by French autostrade and Hebrew אוֹטוֹסְטְרָדָה (otostrada).
