Modern learned borrowing from Aramaic אֲשׁוּר (ˀăšūr), from Akkadian 𒀸𒋩𒆠 (Aššūr, Ashur) the original capital named after the chief deity of that city. Doublet of ܐܵܬ݂ܘܿܪ (āṯōr).
