Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܐܬܘܪ, from Aramaic אתור, from Akkadian 𒀸𒋩𒆠 (Aššūr) with a shift from /š/ to /θ/. Doublet of ܐܵܫܘܿܪ (āšōr) and ܣܘܼܪܝܼܵܐ (sūrīyā, Syria).
