Uncertain. Possibilities include:
- Cognate with ܛܘܪܐ (ṭūrāʾ, “mountain”), possibly from the root ܛ-ܪ-ܪ (ṭ-r-r). Compare Hebrew צֹר (ṣōr).
- From *ܛܪܪܐ (ṭarrārāʾ), through dissimilation of r.
