From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Híẓḍay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hížday, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eysd- (to praise, worship laud). Cognate with Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌽 (aistan, to revere).
