Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀉𑀯𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀸𑀡 (uvakkhāṇa), from Sanskrit उपाख्यान (upākhyāna), उपाख्यानक (upākhyānaka). Compare Gujarati ઉખાણું (ukhāṇũ), ઉખાણો (ukhāṇo), Sindhi اوکاڻ / ओखाण (illustration, example), اوکاڻَڻُ / ओखाणणु (to exemplify, recognise), Nepali उखान (ukhān), Assamese উখনা (ukhona), উখনি (ukhoni, altercation).
