Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀉𑀯𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀸𑀡 (uvakkhāṇa), from Sanskrit उपाख्यान (upākhyāna), उपाख्यानक (upākhyānaka). Compare Gujarati ઉખાણું (ukhāṇũ), ઉખાણો (ukhāṇo), Sindhi اوکاڻ / ओखाण (“illustration, example”), اوکاڻَڻُ / ओखाणणु (“to exemplify, recognise”), Nepali उखान (ukhān), Assamese উখনা (ukhona), উখনি (ukhoni, “altercation”).
