Borrowed from Classical Persian کوتوال (kotvāl), from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit कोटपाल (koṭapāla)/कोट्टपाल (koṭṭapāla) from कोट (koṭa)/कोट्ट (koṭṭa, fort, castle) + पाल (pāla, guard, protector, keeper). Doublet of कोटवाल (koṭvāl).
