Borrowed from Classical Persian کوتوال (kotvāl), from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit कोटपाल (koṭapāla)/कोट्टपाल (koṭṭapāla) from कोट (koṭa)/कोट्ट (koṭṭa, “fort, castle”) + पाल (pāla, “guard, protector, keeper”). Doublet of कोटवाल (koṭvāl).
