Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘐𑘻𑘣𑘜 (gophaṇa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑁄𑀨𑀡𑀸 (gophaṇā), 𑀕𑀼𑀁𑀨𑀡 (guṃphaṇa), from Sanskrit गुम्फन (gumphana), गुम्फना (gumphanā). Compare Gujarati ગોફણ (gophaṇ), Hindustani گوپَھن (gophan) / गोफन (gophan).
