Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘐𑘳𑘢𑘜𑘹 (gupaṇe), 𑘐𑘳𑘽𑘢𑘜𑘹 (guṃpaṇe), 𑘐𑘳𑘽𑘣𑘜𑘹 (guṃphaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀼𑀁𑀨𑀇 (guṃphaï), from Sanskrit गुम्फति (gumphati).
