Etymology edit
Feminine of चिट्टा (ciṭṭā, “bright, white”). Per Turner, ultimately a borrowing of Proto-Nuristani *crittá, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwitrás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwit-ró-s, from *ḱweyt- (“to shine”). Related to Sanskrit श्वित्र (śvitrá), English white.
